Local Member of Parliament visits Martin High

In October, we were thrilled to welcome our local Member of Parliament Peter Bedford to Martin High School.

Upon arrival, Peter – who was elected as the Conservative MP for Mid Leicestershire in the recent General Election – was taken on a tour of our new Sports Hall by Executive Principal Mrs Sanchez; he was also able to watch our Girls Futsal team play a match in the same facility.

Next, Peter met our Student Leadership Team for coffee and cake. Here, learners were able to ask him pre-prepared questions, which he answered in great detail.

They asked him why he got into politics and quizzed him about his role as an MP and what he gets up to on a weekly basis. Learners also questioned Peter about what his party can do to support education and funding, before going on to speak about the rise in apprenticeship schemes.

“It was fantastic to meet Peter Bedford at Martin High School,” said Mrs Sanchez.

“In his 100th day as a Member of Parliament, he spoke with our learners about what life was like as an MP and how he was passionate about equity of opportunity in education.

“He wants to ensure that apprenticeships are well funded and provide ambitious opportunity for all.

“It was great to have him at school and brilliant to have such insight into the work that he does.”

On visiting our school, Peter said: “I understand the importance of visiting educational establishments in my constituency which will help me to understand the challenges faced by schools and educational institutions.”

"It was great to see first-hand the opportunities available to the young people at Martin High during my visit."

A huge thank-you to Peter for taking time out of his day to visit us at Martin High.
