LATEST OFSTED REPORT

In our first full inspection for five years, we again achieved a ‘Good’ rating across all four Ofsted criteria – Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development and Leadership and Management.

Importantly, Inspectors began their report by noting: “Pupils are happy to attend The Martin High School,” before focusing their attention on the strong and varied curriculum.

“The curriculum is broad and ambitious for all pupils,” with acknowledgment given to the wide range of subjects pupils enjoy in key stage 3.

“At key stage 4, pupils choose from a well-considered offer of academic and vocational courses.

“In all subjects, the curriculums are well planned to meet pupils’ interests and provide the knowledge and vocabulary they need to achieve well.”

Alongside a strong academic curriculum, the school was also praised for promoting a strong extra-curricular calendar, hosting multiple enrichment activities that allow learners to develop outside the classroom.

“The curriculum supports pupils’ wider personal development effectively. There are many extra-curricular opportunities available, including clubs, trips and visits. Many pupils take part in these, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND),” inspectors commented.

“Pupils enthusiastically take on responsibilities in school, such as representing the school council. Many pupils get involved with community and charity projects.”

Ofsted also praised the school for the tailored provision they provide to learners who require additional support to fulfil their academic potential.

“The school quickly identifies the needs of pupils with SEND. Staff use effective strategies to support these pupils to access the same learning as their peers."

“The curriculum provides support for pupils to read widely and often. Weaker readers receive support to develop reading fluency so that they can access the curriculum in full.”

Home to around 900 learners, we recognise the importance of promoting inclusivity and diversity, and frequently celebrate people from a range of different backgrounds.

Inspectors noticed this, stating that “[Learners] understand equality and are respectful of different faiths and cultures.”

Similar emphasis is attached to preparing our young people for their next steps, with Ofsted stating:

“The school provides pupils with lots of information about the choices for their next steps in education and future careers. There are opportunities for all pupils to meet with employers and apprenticeship providers and take part in work experience.”

On the judgement from Ofsted, Associate Headteacher Nina Smith said: "We are immensely proud of the hard work, high standards, and resilience of our wonderful learners and staff, which is reflected in Martin High School's latest Ofsted judgement.

“Inspectors recognised the broad and ambitious academic, holistic and extra-curricular offer that our learners enjoy, noting that they are happy to attend school and staff are happy and proud to work here."
