A Royal conversation about enrichment
It is not every day that a school leader gets the chance to sit down with royalty and discuss the future of education.Our Associate Principal, Mr Gamble, and Executive Principal, Ms Sanchez, recently had the honour of doing just that, joining fellow school leaders from across Lionheart Educational Trust at The Cedars Academy as part of a special visit from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh!
The day celebrated the impact of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the many ways it helps young people develop confidence, independence and valuable life skills. While young people from across Leicester showcased the skills they have gained through the programme, education leaders and sixth form students from Lionheart schools gathered for an important round table discussion exploring how DofE can strengthen schools' enrichment offers.
As part of the conversation, Mr Gamble and Ms Sanchez shared perspectives on the role enrichment – opportunities beyond academic learning - plays in helping young people thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Discussions focused on how opportunities such as volunteering, skills development, after school clubs and outdoor challenges can help students build resilience, teamwork and leadership skills that stay with them long after school.
Of course, there was also the small matter of welcoming a royal visitor, complete with a memorable helicopter arrival that added a little extra excitement to the day.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr Gamble said:
"It was a privilege to be part of such an important discussion. The Duke of Edinburgh Award gives young people opportunities to discover talents, develop confidence and challenge themselves in new ways. I’m proud that Martin High School offers the DofE Award programme to all pupils from Year 9."
The visit served as a powerful reminder that some of the most valuable lessons take place beyond the classroom, and that enrichment opportunities continue to play a vital role in helping young people achieve their full potential.
